Michal Hrubý, Research Assistant/Researcher at the Research Centre of the ŠAU, was invited to the debate discussing “In-EV-itable future of the automotive industry: what is the role of the Pacific region.”

The debate focused on international cooperation, sharing of knowledge and supply chains in the automotive industry in Europe and Japan. In particular, the discussion touched on the dynamic research and innovation environment in the battery industry that will shape the future of electric vehicles, as well as the evolution of prices and availability of raw materials required for their production. The panellists emphasised how the changing geopolitical environment is having a significant impact on the development of the automotive industry.

The global automotive industry is being transformed by the current US policy of attracting foreign direct investments in the battery industry and electric vehicle production in the domestic economy or by China’s dominance in mineral processing and battery production. Europe and Japan are responding to that trend by seeking closer cooperation and paying more attention to preserving their domestic industries.

Besides Michal Hrubý, the following panellists participated in the debate: Petr Knap, Mobility and Advanced Manufacturing Leading Partner, Czech Republic and Mobility Leader for Central and Eastern Europe, Ernst & Young Czech Republic, and Jin Kusaka, Professor, Graduate School of Environment and Energy Engineering, Waseda University, Japan.
